TRAINING TIP 10: Dealing with the Side Conversation

By Edwin Pauzer posted 07-03-2017 13:30

Sometimes you will experience a sidebar conversation going on between two or more people during your training. It is not as difficult to deal with as you might think.

1.   Stop your lecture and create a group activity.

2.   Walk near the conversation. This is usually enough to get them to stop.

3.   Lower your voice or suddenly stop talking. The lack of sound will usually make the offenders look up to find out why you
      stopped.

4.   Rotate groups if the socializing persists. To ensure they will be in different groups, ask for a volunteer from each group. The
volunteer will be no.1. Give each group member a different number.

5.   Ask a direct question of one of the participants without trying to embarrass.

What you can also take from this is that groups work better than individual seating. Group pressure can help you maintain a distraction-free atmosphere. Name tents and name tags help you identify the person you want to call on. At least it sounds better than “Hey, you there.”
