TRAINING TIP 23: Creating Flip Charts

By Edwin Pauzer posted 08-14-2017 08:40

Flip Charts are still your most versatile training aid. While it is impractical for large audiences, it has great utility for small ones i.e. no more than 50.

If you are preparing flip charts all you will need is a flat surface, a yardstick, chisel-point permanent markers, a pen knife, and transparent tape.

Lay the flip chart on the flat surface.

Using the yardstick and a dark permanent marker, draw horizontal straight lines across the paper about 2 inches apart. It doesn’t have to be exact.

Remove this paper from the chart pad and place it under the sheet you will write on.

Draw your images, charts or printing on the paper neatly following the lines from the page underneath as you see its shadow.

Make your letters at least 2” high. Block printing works best.

Avoid writing more than three quarters down the page. If the flip chart is on a standard flip chart stand, the participants in the back will not be able to see the bottom.

Remove the lined page from behind your finished page and put behind the next page to be printed.

Always “waste a page” by leaving it blank, or you will have one flip chart page shadowing one after the other.

Staple the printed page near the bottom corners to the blank page behind it so you won’t have to fumble finding which page to turn or lick your fingers.

If you make a mistake:

It’s a shame to waste the whole page for one mistake. If possible, neatly remove the offending error with a pen knife, cut out a fresh piece of paper and place it over the hole from behind. Use the transparency tape on the front or back. Anyone beyond 10 feet will probably not notice it.
