As I continue to look for ways to grow professionally and strengthen my knowledge as a correctional leader, I have been considering pursuing the Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) credential through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
I see value in continuing to build professional credentials that are directly related to the corrections profession, particularly in areas that have such a significant impact on jail operations. Correctional health care intersects with nearly every aspect of our work, including safety, liability, accreditation, behavioral health, quality assurance, and overall facility operations. While my current role is primarily in correctional operations and administration, I also worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an earlier life, so the health care side of corrections has always been an area of interest.
For those who have completed the CCHP, I would appreciate your thoughts on a couple of things.
What study guides, practice exams, NCCHC publications, courses, or other resources did you find most helpful in preparing for the exam? Are there particular areas you would recommend focusing on?
I would also be interested in hearing whether you feel earning the CCHP has benefited you professionally or provided value to your agency or facility. Has it helped you better understand correctional health care operations, work with medical and behavioral health professionals, evaluate policies and practices, prepare for accreditation or inspections, or simply become a more well-rounded correctional professional?
Any recommendations, lessons learned, or thoughts on the value of the credential would be greatly appreciated.
