I am seeking information from local detention correctional facilities regarding hospice and palliative care practices for incarcerated individuals with terminal illnesses.
Specifically, I am interested in learning whether your jail has a hospice or palliative care program or established process, policies and protocols that allows terminally ill individuals to remain in the facility and transition naturally, rather than initiating emergency resuscitative or life-saving measures when death is anticipated and consistent with applicable legal and medical directives.
While I welcome responses from jails nationwide, I have a particular interest in Florida facilities.
If your agency has such a program or process, I would appreciate any information you are willing to share, including:
-
Policies, procedures, or guidelines governing hospice or palliative care.
-
How medical emergencies are managed when an inmate is receiving end-of-life care.
-
Any lessons learned, best practices, or implementation considerations.
