We are looking at updating our recreation sops and we are curious how other agencies define and measure "inclement weather" at their facilities.
Specifically, does your facility use an onsite weather monitoring system? If so, what system/equipment are you using, and would you be willing to share more details?
How do you determine when conditions cross into "inclement weather"? What parameters are you tracking (temperature, heat index, wind, precipitation, etc.), and what's your data source, sensors, a weather service, something else?
We do have a state standard that discusses recreation and temperatures, but there are a lot of other factors that we want to look at when determining what is in the best interest for the health and safety of not only our inmates, but our staff who oversee them during recreation.
Schools have a built-in standard for this via UIL rules and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) readings. Is anyone in our field using something comparable, or building their own criteria from scratch?
Would appreciate hearing how other facilities are handling this.
