My agency is in the process of developing a new Medical Director position for our Adult Detention Center, and I am seeking examples of job descriptions or position classifications from other jurisdictions to help inform our approach.
The position is intended to be a licensed physician (MD or DO) and will likely include responsibilities related to:
- Clinical oversight and quality assurance of contracted medical services
- Ensuring compliance with applicable standards (e.g., NCCHC/ACA)
- Coordination with behavioral health and external healthcare partners
- Advising command staff on medical operations, policy, and risk management
If your agency has a similar position, I would greatly appreciate if you could share:
- Job descriptions or class specs
- Key qualifications (e.g., board certification, correctional experience)
- Organizational placement (e.g., reporting structure)
- Any lessons learned in establishing the role
This is a new position for our agency, so any insight or examples would be extremely helpful.
Additionally, for those in full-service Sheriff's Offices, I would be interested in how this role may interface with other agency functions (e.g., patrol, court services, or specialty units), if applicable.
