    Afternoon,

     

    Polk State College has developed the National Public Safety Innovation Academy (NIA) in partnership with Sheriff Judd and the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The program is an eight-week residential academy, in Florida, designed to bring contemporary issues and hands on practical experience to law enforcement and corrections executives. This program utilizes a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) approach to advance the skills of lieutenants and above. Current topics for this program are listed below.

     

    In addition to delivering blocks of curriculum, speakers from around the nation will come to NIA to conduct critical incident debriefs about mass shooting incidents they faced as agency leaders. For example, there will be presenters to discuss the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School Shooting, 1 October (Mandalay Bay Shooting), South Caroline Lee Correctional Prison Riot, Pulse Nightclub attack, as well as the San Bernardino Terrorist Attack.

    Dates for the next cohort will be September 18th to November 9th, 2023.

     

    NIA current curriculum topics include:

     

    •             Servant Leadership – Joe LeDuc and Rich Slavin, 4 Pillars of Effective Servant Leadership 

    •             Predictive Analytics – "Building a Crime Analysis Legacy. A law enforcement supervisor's roadmap to building long-lasting, high-quality analytical capacity." Author Dawn Reeby

    •             Legal – Command Liability, Civil Liability, Use of Force, Human Error Issues, etc.

    •             Media Relations – Steve Gregory from iHeart Radio – Crisis Communications

    •             Futuristics – Pete Cordero, Cyber Threats from a Leadership and Organizational Perspective

    •             Forensics / Technology – Drones / AI

    •             Mental Health/ Trauma Awareness – Psychology of Lone Actor Shooters – Dr. Andrea Dew, US Naval War College

    •             Functional Fitness / Ropes Course – Terri Hooten, gym owner and functional fitness expert
